Lennon shares what Celtic captain Callum McGregor has told him

The injury to Callum McGregor just sums up the story of Celtic’s season so far.

Brendan Rodgers has had to deal with horrendous injury issues this season as he’s had to deal with top players like Reo Hatate, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Kyogo Furuhashi, Greg Taylor and Alistair Johnston all having spells on the Celtic treatment table.

But, Carter-Vickers aside, missing Callum McGregor is probably one of the worst bits of news Rodgers and the Celtic fans have had to deal with this season.

It doesn’t seem as though the Hoops captain will miss many games after what Rodgers said about his injury this weekend.

And that seems to be bolstered by what the Celtic captain has told Neil Lennon about his injury. The former Celtic manager has shared a conversation he has had with the influential midfielder and this will be a boost for the Hoops support.

Lennon said [The Herald print edition page 3], “Callum McGregor was a huge miss. He was massive on Sunday.

“Celtic missed his influence when he was there. People take him for granted. He’s so good, so experienced, so game-intelligent.

“That was all missing from Celtic against Hearts. He needs to get back asap. They have got a couple of games coming up where you’d look and think they should be okay, then they’ve got the international break, and you’re hoping he’ll be fit after that.

“I was talking to him after Sunday’s game and he didn’t think he was going to be out for too long. Celtic needs him back ASAP.

“He’s a top player and every Celtic team would want a Callum McGregor in it, especially at this stage of the season.”

So it seems McGregor will be out until after the international break where, hopefully, he will be back for the games against Livingston this weekend and St Johnstone the following Saturday.

That means the Hoops captain is likely to return for the Tony Macaroni Arena clash against David Martindale’s men on the 31st of March but, most importantly, the Glasgow Derby on the 7th of April.
