Jack Duffin is using his Age & RAS guardrails plus other data points to try and predict the players the Cleveland Browns are most likely to draft.
This series will look at the positions the Cleveland Browns are most likely to pick during the NFL Draft and then whittle the list down to the top targets.:
Running Back
The roster is loaded with talent and not many holes which gives Andrew Berry the ability to select the best players. I looked in details at this in a recent article. The positons I feel they are most likely to look at:
Likely
Tight End
Tackle
Guard
Linebacker
50/50
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Safety
Low
Center
Cornerback (if Newsome is not traded)
Extremely Low
Quarterback
Edge
Defensive Tackle
Special Teams
Here is each player as I currently see them on the team and if they are battling for a spot or very likely to make the final team:
Here is my best guess at the 53 man roster if it was to be decided today:
AGE & RAS GUARDRAILS
When looking at athletic testing, the Cleveland Browns will have on field player tracking data that is far more accurate than anything we can access, so RAS is the best metric to track this until a day and time when we more information is avaliable for us to use.
Here is a look at the ages and athletic testing of the draft prospects plus the predicted rounds based on Mock Draft Database’s consensus big board. Any player who is red is a player that is older or less athletic than someone Andrew Berry has ever drafted in that round.
Once we remove the players who are red we get the below list:
REMOVING SOME ADDITIONAL NAMES
Here is a look at some players on I don’t think will be targets for the Browns:
Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, Rome Odunze, Brian Thomas Jr., Adonai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy, Ladd McConkey, Keon Coleman & Troy Franklin – this group are going in the first round or high in the second so I wouldn’t spend too long looking at them as realistic targets. Although I would really like Franklin if he is there when they pick.
Devontez Walker, Jermaine Burton, Johnny Wilson, Luke McCaffrey – here are some players that are older than I would ideally like to be targeting in the draft.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint – the athletic testing was not as good as you would like so I would remove him from the board.
This leaves you eleven players left to consider on the shortlist:
Ja’Lynn Polk
Malachi Corley
Jalen McMillan
Brenden Rice
Javon Baker
Ainias Smith
Anthony Gould
Cornelius Johnson
Lideatrick Griffin
Tahj Washington
Bub Means
THREE TOP TARGETS
Here are three players I think are likely to be top of their list of targets:
Brenden Rice – When you are reading about great route running and high football intelligence and then pairing that with good but not elite athletic testing it is worth a shot.
Ainias Smith – If the Browns draft a wide receiver it will take them to six on the roster, so having someone who can bring a special teams and return element is key. They have Hines but this is a one year move and they have the option of two returners on kick offs. He can then produce in the slot too, many people are high on Ricky Pearsall for his instant impact but the rookie isn’t going to see the field without an injury to the top few players so instant impact shouldn’t be a key focus.
Tahj Washington – Another player who is going to help regarding special teams, plus he seems to be the sort of player Stefanski craves who can do lots of different roles and be used in the trick style plays that they are always trying to work into the gameplan.
