Pundit and Falkirk midfielder Stephen McGinn, brother of Scotland star John, can see why Celtic would sign young Aberdeen man Connor Barron.
The 21-year-old is out of contract in the Granite City this summer and resultantly, is available for free.
Because he is a high-potential, young, homegrown player, McGinn can understand why the Hoops would want to move for Barron. He understands, though, that Daniel Kelly is coming through the ranks.
The teenager made his senior debut against Buckie Thistle in January and has made a fair few appearances since then.
Although signing Barron would potentially cast into doubt Kelly’s opportunities, McGinn can’t get away from his credentials. He said: [live on air on Go Radio] “He’s a free transfer in the summer, he’s a really talented player”.
“I can’t see him getting into the Celtic or Rangers midfield at this time. The reason he would appeal to me, would be the quota for being Scottish. He’s a young talented kid, he’s a free transfer and ticks a lot of boxes.
“I just couldn’t see him, at this moment in time, getting a game for Celtic.
“Also, you look at Daniel Kelly.
“Those academy guys will probably feel they’ve got someone like for like that they would like to push from their own academy.”
Although signing the Scotland youth internationalist may appeal to some, Celtic does have incredible depth in the midfield.
When fit, Brendan Rodgers has Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley, Tomoki Iwata, Paulo Bernardo, Odin Holm, and Daniel Kelly all to pick from. Adding Barron to the mix would come with its positives but there is a fair argument to suggest there is no need for his acquisition.
