Derrick Henry clarified his comments about the “perfect situation” that supposedly awaited him with the Dallas Cowboys.
Derrick Henry always intened to fly.
The star running back appeared on CBS Sports Radio’s “Jim Rome Show” on Tuesday to clarify recent comments regarding his transactional fate, one where he claimed that the Dallas Cowboys carried a “perfect situation” for his NFL future despite signing with the Baltimore Ravens.
Henry declared that purple was always his first choice and that he never got a call from The Star “For the record, Baltimore was always my No. 1 option,” Henry told Rome. “That’s always where I wanted to go … I know the Cowboys lost (Tony) Pollard, so I didn’t know if they’re going to be looking for a running back. I live here in the offseason, I’ve been training here, living here for a while, so I just thought it made sense, and you know, I thought there’d be talks. But they never really reached out.”
Henry is smart to do some spin control here. He owns a home about 18 minutes from The Star. It would have in many ways been “perfect.” But if a team never calls, that team cannot be an “option.”
So yes, the Ravens were King Henry’s “top option.’
Despite Pollard’s struggles in his first season as the premier Dallas rushing option, the Cowboys are in a bit of a bind now that he, ironically enough, is moving onto Nashville to replace Henry in the Tennessee Titans’ backfield. Rico Dowdle is probably the No. 1 option with fellow project Deuce Vaughn set to serve as his spell option. Dallas will likely turn to the draft to find a new rushing threat.
Henry remarked that he doesn’t hold any animosity toward the Cowboys, which is probably for the best: Baltimore, the AFC’s defending top seed, is set to visit AT&T Stadium at some point next fall.
Everything happens for a reason. I just pray to God to put me in the place where I’m meant to be, and Baltimore is that spot,” he said. “I’m happy and I’m excited for the opportunity. But the Cowboys never reached out, and it’s all good. At the end of the day, no hard feelings.”
