Leeds United Targeting Transfer From Championship Rivals

Leeds United will set their sights on Southampton striker Che Adams this summer as they look to bolster their attacking options, according to TEAMtalk.

The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to generate much interest from across the country and Europe. It is expected that he will bring his five-year stay at St Mary’s to an end after joining from Birmingham City for a fee of £15 million.

The Saints were relegated from the Premier League last season, prompting speculation that he could leave the club. Everton were ready to bring the Scottish international to Merseyside, but the move failed despite negotiations taking place between the two clubs all summer.

Adams has played a big role in Russell Martin’s team as they target an immediate return to the top tier. He has drifted in and out of the team, but has hit 12 goals in 34 Championship appearances, including his strike in Tuesday night’s 2-1 win over Coventry City.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are another touted with interest, but Leeds are expected to make a move following the end of the campaign. It is said that the Whites will swoop regardless of whether they earn promotion and they view the attacker as an upgrade on their current options, which include Patrick Bamford and Joel Piroe.

Daniel Farke’s team sit third in the table ahead of their lunchtime kick off against Blackburn Rovers later today. However, at least a point would see them return to the automatic promotion places with just three games remaining.

Meanwhile, Southampton have kept in contention with the top three for the majority of the campaign although they are currently 10 points behind Ipswich Town in second. They do possess two games in hand on their rivals though, and host Watford this afternoon. Adams is expected to start in what could be a crucial fixture on the south coast.

Southampton may regret not taking the money while they could last summer. It was claimed that Everton were willing to pay between £12-15 million for the striker and the Saints could now lose the player for free.

A new contract looks unlikely and could hinge on whether they achieve promotion themselves. Adams will be keen to return to the Premier League and will have no shortage of offers. He will be an attractive option for many clubs due to the lack of fee involved in the deal. Leeds may lose top goalscorer Crysencio Summerville so could be looking to increase their attacking output.
