Young Rangers fan dies in Lisbon after Europa League clash with Benfica

A young Rangers fan has died in Lisbon after the Europa League clash with Benfica. Tributes have flooded in for Thomas McAllister after he passed away in Lisbon on Thursday while travelling with pals to support the Ibrox football club.

 

Just hours before his death, the 25-year-old was in high spirits, posting pictures on social media of him and close friends in the city, ahead of his side’s 2-2 draw.

But tragedy struck in the Portuguese capital as friends and family back home in Scotland were told the devastating news that he had passed away during the trip.

A Rangers FC statement said: “It is with profound sadness Rangers FC has been made aware supporter Thomas McAllister has passed away in Lisbon following last night’s UEFA Europa League tie with Benfica.

“The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with Thomas’ family and friends, and we will remain in constant contact with both the Portuguese and British authorities over this tragic incident.”

The young dad, from Drumchapel, was known as Tam to pals. Abbi Sinclair said: “Heartbreaking cannot believe it. RIP Tam you’ll be so missed by everyone.”

Andy McInnes said: “Rest in peace Tam. Another Drum boy taken too soon.” Chris Forbes said: “RIP Thomas McAllister. Such horrible news.” Nicole Fullerton also spoke of her heartbreak and said loved ones would rally round his mum and kids.

“This is a hard one. One as a family we will need to support your mum, your beautiful kids and as a community lost another young life far to soon. sleep tight going to miss that big smile and laugh of yours. I hope your up there with your dad and Ricky love you.

Chloe Connelly added: “Gutted. I don’t even know what to say, never thought I’d have to write this. RIP Thomas.” And John Donaghey said: “God bless the wee laddie Tam very sad news. Condolences to all his pals and family.”

In the Rangers statement, CEO James Bisgrove added: “On behalf of the club, I want to pass on my sincere condolences to Thomas’ loved ones, family and his friends.

“The club stands ready to assist Thomas’ family in whatever way we can in the coming days and weeks.”

The Daily Record has approached The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Portuguese police for comment.
