Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as Unai Emery’s side target Champions League qualification in the final weeks of the Premier League season.
Aston Villa are locked in a two-horse race with Tottenham Hotspur for the final Champions League position.
Unai Emery’s side have been in the top four for 20 of the 35 gameweeks this term and haven’t dropped lower than fifth place since September. Spurs, meanwhile, started the Premier League campaign with eight wins in their first 10 games, but have only won back-to-back matches once since the turn of the New Year.
After successive defeats against Newcastle and Arsenal, Spurs are currently seven points behind Villa with five games to play. Ange Postecoglou’s team will play one of their two games in hand on Villa on Thursday night, against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
If Chelsea win on Thursday, Villa will have a huge opportunity to pile the pressure on Spurs in the race for Champions League football. A victory for Villa over Brighton and two defeats on the road for Tottenham this week, against Chelsea and Liverpool, would see Villa secure a top four finish.
It would be mathematically impossible for Tottenham to reach a total of 70 points with only three game remaining against Burnley (H), Manchester City (H) and Sheffield United (A).
If Villa were to take three points from their next two games against Brighton and Liverpool, they’d only need a draw on the final day at Crystal Palace to secure Champions League football if Tottenham only win two and draw one of their next four games.
