Tristan Stubbs can become as good as AB de Villiers: Ambati Rayudu praises DC star
IPL 2024: Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu heaped praise on DC star Tristan Stubbs, highlighting his multifaceted skills and drawing comparisons to the legendary South African AB de Villiers
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu hailed DC’s young batting sensation Tristan Stubbs after the South African star concluded his breakout Indian Premier League (IPL) season with a match-winning all-round performance against LSG at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday. Rayudu backed Stubbs to become as good as the legendary AB de Villiers while lauding his all-round heroics for the Rishabh Pant-led side. Stubbs’ performances have certainly caught the eye this season, with his ability to adapt to different deliveries and execute powerful shots making him a standout player.
“Tristan Stubbs is an all-round package. He has bowled a beautiful over and the way he has been striking the ball this season — he hits every length, right from the short ball to a fuller ball. He is also very good against slower ones. I feel he has tremendous talent. He is one of those South Africans in the mould of AB de Villiers. I think he has long way to get there. But, he looks really good to become as good as AB de Villiers,” Rayudu said while speaking on Star Sports.
The young all-rounder scored an unbeaten 57 off just 25 balls, with three fours and four sixes, at an impressive strike rate of 228.00 against LSG and took the crucial wicket of Ayush Badoni. Stubbs has been a star performer for the Capitals (DC) with 378 runs at an average of 54.00 and an astonishing strike rate of 190.90, including three half-centuries in 13 IPL 2024 matches. His highest score this season was an unbeaten 71.
Stubbs also contributed with the ball, taking three wickets, with his best figures being 2/11. His overall impact on the game has been significant, particularly in the death overs. Purchased at a bargain price of Rs 50 lakh, Stubbs has proven to be an invaluable asset for DC, especially in the closing stages of the innings. In the last three overs of matches this season (overs 18-20), he has scored 173 runs from 54 deliveries at a staggering strike rate of 320.40, being dismissed only once and playing just two dot balls. His tally includes 13 fours and 15 sixes.
Stubbs leads the league in death-over runs with 252 at a strike rate of 262.5, surpassing RCB veteran Dinesh Karthik, who has 226 runs at a strike rate of 226 from overs 16-20. This exceptional performance has solidified Stubbs’ reputation as a rising star in the IPL and a key player for the Delhi Capitals.
