Brentford Confirm Summer Departures

Shandon Baptiste, Saman Ghoddos and Charlie Goode will leave on 30 June once their contracts expire, while loanees Neal Maupay and Sergio Reguilón will return to Everton and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

Brentford signed Baptiste from Oxford United in January 2020.

The midfielder has made 78 appearances for the club, 55 in the Premier League, and scored two goals.

Director of football Phil Giles said: “We signed Shandon when we were in the Championship, when the aim was to achieve promotion to the Premier League.

“Shandon and Brentford have achieved that together, and he has gone on to be involved in some significant moments for us as a Premier League player for the last three seasons.

“In truth, I’m sure Shandon would want to be involved on the pitch more than he has been, which is why we feel it’s the right time to let him become a regular and key player at another club.”

Versatile midfielder Ghoddos re-joined Brentford on a one-year contract last summer.

In total, the Iran international has made 107 appearances and scored five goals.

His sumptuous strike in the Bees’ 3-0 win over Burnley at Gtech Community Stadium this season won the Premier League’s Goal of the Month award for October.

“Saman is one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met in football, he’s always positive and makes a fantastic contribution at training and around the squad every day,” said Giles.

“It was an easy decision to bring him back last summer and he has completely justified that decision.

“He will always be welcome at the club and of course we shouldn’t rule out him coming back again sometime in the future.”

Charlie Goode joined Brentford from Northampton Town after their promotion to League One in 2019/20 and made 20 appearances for the west Londoners.

The centre-back spent the second half of this season on loan at Wigan Athletic.

“Charlie has been incredibly unlucky with injuries and illness since not long after joining us,” Giles commented.

“That said, whenever he played, I always thought he did very well and contributed to some important results, especially during our first season in the Premier League.

“He has shown that he can play at this level, and it was good to see him get some significant minutes during the latter part of the season at Wigan.”

Maupay, who scored 41 goals in 95 games for the Bees between 2017 and 2019, re-joined the club on loan from Everton on 1 September.

The striker has made 30 appearances for Brentford in all competitions this season and scored eight goals.

Giles said: “Neal has made a massive contribution to Brentford during both of his spells with the club. He has completely justified the decision to bring him back on loan, contributing important goals and being a key part of the squad.

“Brentford retains the option to bring Neal back permanently if we wish, but we have explained that we will pause that decision for now, having already signed Igor Thiago from Club Brugge.”

Reguilón made a temporary switch from Tottenham on 17 January.

The left-back has made 15 Premier League appearances for the club and registered four assists, two of which came during the 3-3 draw with Aston Villa last month.

“Sergio was the perfect player at the perfect time for us,” said Giles.

“It was a loan that, at best, would suit both parties and that is exactly the way that it has turned out.

“Sergio has enjoyed being with us and played a significant number of minutes which will set him up well for next season, wherever that may be.”

Giles concluded: “On behalf of everyone at Brentford I want to thank all the players who are leaving us this summer and wish them every success in the future.”
