New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones may no longer have the favor of the fans and the media, but he certainly still holds a strong impression on his teammates.
Pass-rusher Brian Burns, the Giants’ blockbuster acquisition of the offseason, recently discussed the first impression his quarterback had on him and praised Jones on and off the field.
Brian Burns praises Daniel Jones’s athleticism and demeanor
While speaking with the media, Burns gave his thoughts on Jones, praising the signal-caller’s athleticism and demeanor:
“Getting to know him as a guy, he’s a cool dude,” Burns told reporters (h/t Giants Country). “Before, I didn’t know him at all. As an opponent, we always honored his athleticism. That was something we keyed in on. He definitely burned me to the sideline once–please don’t play that clip!”
Jones is currently rehabbing from a torn ACL, so he has not been on the field much to compete against Burns in practice. However, Burns is looking forward to the occasion, which could come soon:
“He’s a true competitor,” Burns said. “I haven’t really got to see him on the field yet because he’s going through whatever he’s going through, but (I’m) looking forward to it.”
Jones and Burns will be key components of the Giants’ success in 2024
Much of the Giants’ 2024 season will hinge on the performance of both Jones and Burns. Big Blue needs a bounce-back campaign from Jones after he went 1-5 in six starts with only two touchdowns and six interceptions before tearing his ACL in 2023.
Burns is a massive addition to a defensive front that aims to be among the best in the NFL this season. He led the Panthers in overall pressures each season since 2020 and totaled 42 pressures in 2023 per Next Gen Stats. He’s added up 28 sacks,157 QB pressures, and 33 QB hits since 2021. In 2023, Burns finished with eight sacks, 16 tackles for loss, and 18 combined tackles.
After going 6-11 last season, the Giants need their stars to step up and improve their record in 2024. Jones playing at a high level will go a long way toward achieving that goal, and the same can be said about Burns who will lead a revamped defensive lineup under new coordinator Shane Bowen.
