Lawrence Cager saw little playing time in 2023.
In anticipating of Darren Waller retiring, the New York Giants have loaded up at tight. They added veteran inline tight ends Chris Manhertz and Jack Stoll in free agency and drafted all-around tight end Theo Johnson in Round 4 of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Could that mean that, regardless of Waller’s status, there won’t be any room for backup receiving tight end Lawrence Cager? Let’s discuss Cager as we continue up player-by-player profiles of the Giants’ 90-man roster.

Career to date
Cager was a wide receiver at Georgia, and while he converted to tight end in the NFL he still appears to have the slender body of a wide receiver.
Cager has been with the New York Jets (twice), Cleveland Browns and Giants in a career that began in 2020. Thirteen of his 19 receptions have come with the Giants in the past two seasons, eight of those in a career-best eight-reception game against the Philadelphia Eagles during the 2022 season finale.
Cager barely played on offense in 2023. After playing 203 snaps in just six games for the Giants in 2022, he played jusy 101 offensive snaps in 11 games last season.
It lookd right now like it will be a struggle for Cager to stick with the Giants in 2024.
