Celtic unveiled its latest line of Adidas training gear this week, and there’s one pre-match top everyone seems to be talking about.
If you’ve cast your eye on the club’s digital storefront since, you’ll know the one I’m talking about: the weirdly hypnotic, psychedelic green and white number with flavours of the Nigeria national team’s similarly eye-catching efforts of late that were designed by brand rivals Nike.
The shirt’s official description reads: “Inspired by the iconic, unifying pre-match huddle, this Adidas Celtic 2024/25 Pre-Match Jersey celebrates the togetherness of the team and the fans with an eye-catching all-over design.”
And whether you’re willing to swallow that whimsical marketing line or not is your call, but I’m oddly obsessed with the top itself. I hate it, but at the same time I absolutely love it.
At £60, it feels like an absolute rip-off, and yet I can’t stop hovering my cursor over the PRE-ORDER button, before closing the tab down entirely while muttering under my breath that I really need to get a grip.
A cursory glance at the replies beneath the club’s training gear reveal post on X (formerly Twitter) illustrates a similarly conflicted consortium – with some would-be buyers hailing the top’s unorthodox design, and others hardly holding back on how much they really do not care for it.
As divisive as the training top appears to be (it is worth noting its long-sleeve iteration looks like a Christmas jumper gone wrong), I reckon it’ll have a notable presence come Matchday One of the 2024/25 Scottish Premiership campaign despite its naysayers.
One other incoming training top that caught my eye is this one:
It’s a nice if decidedly safe (at least in comparison to the aforementioned) effort. But given the fact Celtic’s training gear quite often shares a colour palette with at least one of the accompanying season’s kits, the neon and black combination here has sent my mind racing.
Rumours of a neon and black third kit have been knocking around various corners of the internet for some time, but it occurred to me the other day that more time has elapsed since the bumblebee revival kit of the 2009/10 season, than there was between that kit and the original ’90s Umbro strip it was inspired by.
Celtic are yet to officially reveal next season’s away kit, but it’s expected to adopt a yellow and green colour palette akin to that of the Seville era.
Nothing concrete has as yet surfaced with regards to next season’s third kit, but I’d bite your hand off for a modern day bumblebee rival.
Conjecture on my part? Absolutely. But I’m buzzing to see what comes to light in the coming weeks ahead of the next campaign all the same.
