Aston Villa plot a Star U-turn following transformation – Sources

Clement Lenglet could re-join Aston Villa on loan this summersources have told Football Insider.

The possibility of the centre-back staying at Villa Park seemed out of the question following his lack of game time in the first half of the campaign, but he has turned his career around with recent impressive displays for Unai Emery’s side.

Lenglet, 28, has been a regular over recent months and that could land him a new Villa deal when the season ends.

Lenglet moved from Barcelona on a season-long loan last summer, but the deal does not include an option to buy.

His current deal with the La Liga giants is set to expire in the summer of 2026 after he penned an extension in 2020.

Clement Lenglet has revitalised his career at Aston Villa

Sources told Football Insider last year that Lenglet is believed to be earning £204,000-a-week at parent club Barcelona, but it is unknown how much of his huge salary the Villans are paying.

Barcelona are currently seeking a new manager after Xavi announced that he will depart at the end of the season.

The opinion of the new Barca boss could change the club’s plans for Lenglet, but it is believed that Villa are open to taking him back temporarily next season.

The Frenchman did not make a single Premier League appearance in his first four months at the Birmingham giants but was fielded regularly in their Europa Conference League group-stage games.

However, he has started their last 11 league fixtures and has impressed fans and Villa chiefs.

Aston Villa remain fourth in the Premier League table following their 4-0 loss against fifth-place Tottenham on Sunday (10 March).

They are next in action against Ajax in the second leg of their Europa Conference League last-16 tie on Thursday (14 March).
