Celtic sent £20m transfer update for Championship goal-machine

The midfielder finished last season as the top scorer in the Championship despite Blackburn Rovers enduring an underwhelming campaign.

West Ham, Celtic and Everton have been sent an update in the reported transfer pursuit of Blackburn Rovers star man Sammie Szmodics this summer as the Championship club ready a pay rise offer for the 28-year-old.

LiverpoolWorld had named the Glasgow giants and the Hammers as rivals to the Toffees for the player who emerged as the Championship’s top scorer last season with 27 goals. However, in recent weeks, it appears to be the Toffees who have emerged as frontrunners – despite Szmodics being an avid Hammers supporter.

The Sun reports that Rovers are readying a bumper new contract for the impressive midfielder but, should he not accept, a transfer could be sanctioned. The Championship club values the player at around £20 million.

Everton are believed to have marked Szmodics as an ideal replacement for midfielder Amadou Onana, who looks set to join Premier League rivals Aston Villa. The Rovers’ man would also add firepower to a squad that is preparing to see Dominic Calvert-Lewin exit for Newcastle United this summer.

Szmodics only signed a new deal with Blackburn Rovers in November 2023 but his phenomenal efforts last season are set to see another wage rise offered. His current contract is set to expire in 2026 but the club does hold the option for another year.

Szmodics recently told the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast: “I have two and a half years on my contract and so it is out of my hands.

“It’s a case of me enjoying my summer and seeing what’s out there. I don’t think anyone would begrudge me if a Premier League team came knocking. It is everyone’s dream to play in the Premier League. I don’t know if that opportunity will arise but I don’t think anyone could be blamed if they have the chance to play in the top flight.

“Look at Adam Wharton, he’s 20 and flying at Crystal Palace, he’s Blackburn through and through. I am 28 now and I want to test myself.”
