The New York Knicks narrowly escaped a comeback attempt by the Detroit Pistons on Friday evening 91-90, clinching a 91–90 victory.
Despite leading by double digits heading into the fourth quarter, the Knicks saw their lead dwindle as Detroit outscored them 27–15 in the final stretch but managed to secure the win with robust defensive efforts.
Rookie Spotlight: Tyler Kolek’s Continues to Impress the Knicks
Tyler Kolek, a second-round rookie from Marquette, continued to impress with another standout performance. He shot 3-9 from the field, tallying eight points, three rebounds, and seven assists. Kolek’s remarkable court vision was on full display, solidifying his potential role in the Knicks’ plans for the upcoming season.
Dmytro Skapintsev Dominates the Court
However, the star of the game was Dmytro Skapintsev, a former undrafted player who has spent two years with the Westchester Knicks. In just 21 minutes, Skapintsev produced 17 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks, shooting 6-10 from the field. His performance not only topped the team’s scoring and rebounding charts but also contributed a team-high +6 in the plus/minus column.
Knicks’ Summer League Review: Evaluating Team Performance
Throughout the Summer League, Skapintsev has consistently delivered impressive performances, emerging as a phenomenal presence on the court. Overall, the Knicks shot 43.1% from the field and 26.1% from three-point range during the game against the Pistons, showcasing areas of inefficiency despite the win.
Looking Ahead: Opportunities and Potential Acquisitions
With a 2–2 record in Summer League play, the Knicks are keen to further evaluate the contributions of Kolek and Skapintsev. Given his dominant performance against Summer League and G-league talent, Skapintsev might compete for a roster spot, potentially pairing up with Mitchell Robinson to add depth to the Knicks’ center position.
Additionally, reports indicate ongoing discussions between the Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks regarding veteran center Clint Capela. While a deal has yet to materialize, the Knicks continue to explore options to bolster their lineup with experienced players.
