Newcastle United are keen to add a midfielder to their ranks this summer and they now look to be leading the race for one of their kay targets.

Chief scout Steve Nickson has been working hard over the last couple of months with a trip to Italy where he was watching over Atalanta’s Ederson ahead of a potential move.

A new report from ChronicleLive now claims that despite interest elsewhere, Newcastle are the club leading the race to sign the Brazilian midfielder who has shone this season.

Newcastle want ‘brilliant’ midfielder this summer

Newcastle had set their sights on the Atalanta star at the end of last year and their interest has never wavered, though they were unable to afford a deal in January.

Now, with money coming in from the Champions League and commercial deals with Adidas, Newcastle are ready to make some big name signings to push them to that next level to compete with the very best.

Nickson, who has already brought some key players to the club like Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak, clearly feels like Ederson could be the next game changer for Newcastle.

The ‘brilliant‘ midfielder has been a key figure in Atalanta’s team this season and has attracted interest from the likes of Tottenham, Liverpool and Man United, but it is Newcastle who look in the strongest position.

Newcastle need star quality next season

Eddie Howe has done an unbelievable job at Newcastle considering the squad he had to work with when he first came in and he has improved so many players with a lot of hard work and determination.

Newcastle now have earned the reputation of being an intense team who press high and run themselves into the ground for their manager and fans, but that can only get you so far.

There’s a sense that they need more quality in the first team if they are to push on to a Champions League position or beyond next season which is ultimately the goal for these owners.

Ederson is quite obviously a talented midfielder with energy to burn and could certainly proved Newcastle with exactly what they need both offensively and defensively next season for the right price
