Ever since the Dallas Mavericks’ loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, they’ve made two moves to solidify their roster for the playoff push.
The first move came right after the game when they converted A.J. Lawson’s two-way deal to a standard contract. Lawson was easily one of the best options for the Mavs’ final roster spot, and he gives them some much-needed wing depth.
Dallas was also interested in Spencer Dinwiddie before he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, and it seemed like they wanted to find a backup point guard.
Newly signed Mavericks wing sets tough, but achievable goal for rest of season
Dante Exum’s availability has partially alleviated their need for a backup guard, but they pivoted to signing Lawson.
Their second move came today when they signed former Los Angeles Lakers wing Alex Fudge to a two-way contract. This roster spot was freed up after Lawson’s contract was converted to a standard deal, and now the Mavs are set with their 18-man roster. Dallas’ three two-way players (Brandon Williams, Greg Brown III, and Alex Fudge) won’t be eligible for the playoffs, but all three players have potential and some upside.
Earlier today, Lawson had media availability and was visibly excited about his new deal. Now that Lawson is on a standard contract, he also has a new goal for himself.
“My next goal is try to get in the rotation, try to help my team win,” Lawson said. “My next goal is to keep building, keep grinding, getting better every day, and showing the team that I’m ready for when my time is called.”
Lawson had a stretch when he played every game in December, but hasn’t played consistently since. Now that he’s on a standard contract, Lawson is set on being a rotation player and proving that he can be relied upon.
If Tim Hardaway Jr. continues to struggle, Lawson could find himself in the rotation sooner rather than later. The Mavs need some new energy, and Lawson’s defense and hustle could help with that. His goal will be tough to achieve this season, but it’s a great goal for the young wing nonetheless.
For all the latest on A.J. Lawson, Alex Fudge, and the Dallas Mavericks this season, stay tuned.
