Garang Kuol loan move left in ‘utter chaos’

Newcastle United are aware of political meltdown in Volendam as a dozen staff are sacked leaving Garang Kuol’s loan move in chaos

Garang Kuol’s loan move to Holland has been left in a state of utter chaos after a mass exodus at FC Volendam.

Around a dozen staff were shown the door at the Dutch club including former Inter Milan star Wim Jonk, the club’s transfer supremo, and technical director Jasper van Leeuwen and manager Matthias Kohler who wanted to sign Newcastle United Kuol so much. Since their departure the 19-year-old has been benched and frozen out of the starting line-up.

Kuol has not done anything wrong at Volendam, now managed by Regillio Simons, and his exit from the starting line-up is down to a change of system, not a decline in his progress. Volendam are now playing with ultra-defensive tactics and that has left Kuol out in the cold and in need of a change in scene next season.

Kuol’s loan spell in Holland had been going to plan after 16 appearances, one goal and one assist with the reports going back to Eddie Howe’s desk positive from loan managers Peter Ramage and Shola Ameobi. But his omission at Volendam has left Howe and his backroom team concerned and the aim will now be to get him back to Newcastle in pre-season to take a closer look.

However, he could end up starring for Australia Under-23s at the Olympics if the Socceroos qualify for the tournament in France if selected. Either way, Newcastle chiefs could be glad to see the back of what is turning into an ill-fated loan spell for Kuol.

Newcastle wanted Kuol to get regular football at Volendam after he was restricted to just one start for Heart of Midlothian last season in the Scottish Premiership. The departure of sporting director Dan Ashworth has also resulted in the man who signed him leaving the scene to cause further disruption.

But Howe will be eager to get him back to the training ground this summer and start afresh with the 19-year-old who has shown so much promise and potential. Newcastle are understood to be sympathetic to the political meltdown that has unfolded in Holland with Volendam and are monitoring the situation from Tyneside.

Benching Kuol has hardly helped Volendam as they sit rock bottom of the table in Holland and they have been thumped 4-0 and 5-2 in their last two matches by Heerenveen and NEC Nijmegen respectively.
