Left-back will regret rejecting Leeds

At the start of the season, Leeds United were trying to raid Leicester City for left-back Luke Thomas but the defender chose to join Sheffield United – and now, he will surely be wishing he joined us.

The highly-rated Thomas, 22, left Leicester on loan for an immediate return to the Premier League with newly-promoted Sheffield United. Leeds did try to sign Thomas, with the need for a left-back very high.

But he chose Sheffield United, citing the desire to play Premier League football. He played just 13 times for The Blades before his loan was cancelled in January, and he was sent on loan to Middlesbrough.

Deemed a bit of a coup for Michael Carrick’s side, Thomas played in five of six games since his arrival – missing the clash against Leicester, his parent side. But he hashardly jumped off the page for Boro.

Indeed, on Wednesday night with Carrick’s side needing a win – he was dropped and left on the bench, unused. Luke Ayling’s side came from behind to beat Norwich 3-1 at The Riverside, without Thomas.

Luke Thomas will be wishing he joined Leeds United last summer

Thomas has gone from rejecting Leeds – with Daniel Farke’s men pushing for automatic promotion – to being dropped by Boro, who sit way down in 12th place and lack any hope of a late play-off push.

Ask Thomas now, and he might be wishing he chose to accept a loan move to Leeds from Leicester. Certainly, he would have been first choice with left-back Junior Firpo injured to begin with this season.

But, Thomas will now have to work hard to get back into Boro’s side under Carrick. Come the summer, it will be interesting to see where the £20k-a-week defender ends up. Maybe, Leeds retain an interest.
