Newcastle United looked destined to sell a key player during the January transfer window, as profit and sustainability reared its ugly head.

The likes of Kieran Trippier, Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron were all linked with moves away, as Newcastle looked to raise funds for incoming transfers.

However, they all remained at St James’ Park. Eddie Howe retained the services of three important players, despite Trippier being the subject of multiple bids from Bayern Munich.

The 33-year-old looked destined to leave at one point in time, but the Bundesliga giants would not pay Newcastle’s asking price. They wanted around £20million for Trippier, which would have represented good business considering his age.

However, it was deemed too much by Bayern, which resulted in the England international staying put – much to the delight of the Toon hierarchy.

But while he stayed in January, there are no guarantees that Trippier continues his Toon career next season.

Kieran Trippier’s Newcastle United future is unclear

That is according to the Athletic, who state that a move away from St James’ Park is not out of the question for Trippier.

They add that the club would ideally like to keep the £12million man, but there are seemingly no guarantees.

Trippier will be going into the final year of his Newcastle contract, with his current deal running until the summer of 2025. That is why the club will need to make a decision regarding his future, as they will not want to lose him for free next year.

It will be a very tough decision, as Trippier is incredibly important to Newcastle United. He has been transformative since his arrival, but he will also turn 34 later this year, while the Magpies already have his replacement in Tino Livramento.

From a business perspective, it would make sense to move Trippier on at the end of the season. But sentiment would dictate he ends his career at St James’ Park, whenever that may be.

As is the case with a lot of players this summer, Newcastle will need to decide whether to rule with their heart or their head when it comes to Trippier.
