Celtic have had few players in recent years who fans have taken to quite as much as Kieran Tierney due to his passion for the club.
During his time at Parkhead, the 26-year-old racked up 170 appearances across all competitions, registering eight goals and 37 assists [Transfermarkt].
Tierney also lay claim to five Scottish Premiership titles at Parkhead before completing a money-spinning £25 million move to Arsenal back in 2019.
Since he departed, there has always been a clamour for the Scotland international to make his way back to his boyhood club, with rumours hitting fever pitch last summer, though nothing came to fruition.
Eventually, Tierney ended up at Real Sociedad, and has revealed there are similarities between his teammates at San Sebastien and his old Celtic colleagues.
He stated: “These boys here are like me playing for Celtic. Growing up, the club is all you know and all you want.
“When I was there in the first team, there were maybe four or five from the academy, but here it’s more like 13 — it’s on the next level. You can tell they have been playing with each other for years. It’s second nature — they don’t need to think about what decision they take.”
Recently, GIVEMESPORT has claimed that Tierney could be on the move this summer once he returns to North London; nevertheless, £20 million is believed to be the ‘starting point’ for any negotiations, making a return to Celtic extremely unlikely if the report were accurate.
Mark Wilson drops quip on Kieran Tierney returning to Celtic
Everyone would be delighted to see Tierney return home; however, former Celtic man Mark Wilson doesn’t believe that is a likely possibility any time soon.
The 39-year-old told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: “There will be a queue of teams for him if he’s not going to fit back in at Arsenal.
“Tierney is undoubtedly a Celtic fan, and I’m sure he’d love to come back and represent the club again, but when he’s at the peak of his career, he’s earning x amount of pounds. Celtic will never be able to match it, and unfortunately, I cannot see that happening this summer.”
Kieran Tierney returning to Celtic would be a difficult ask
Undoubtedly, we’d all love to see Celtic push the boat out to land Tierney; nevertheless, he is reported to earn a weekly wage of around £110,000 per week at present, which is just totally unviable [Salary Sport].
It is unclear what would need to happen for a deal to come to fruition, though it seems as if the prospect of him returning to Parkhead will need to remain a nice thought only for now.
One day, there may be a set of circumstances that present an opening to get Tierney back on board; however, that is more likely to happen later in his career.
