Star ‘rejected’ by Rangers at 14 now wanted

There was a point in Lewis Ferguson’s career, long before Philippe Clement took over, when Rangers could have secured the midfielder’s services for the long term.

It turns out that the Scottish midfielder could have had a completely different path, as he once failed to sign for Rangers as a teenager.

This story is told by his agent in an interview with CalcioNapoli24 Live today, with his agent Bill McMurdo bringing some details of what happened at Ibrox the time, claiming that never really harmed the player.

“Ferguson was rejected at 14 by Rangers and came to me to tell me that this had not affected him at all and in the future he would play in Serie A. Already at 14 he had a dream of playing for Italy,” said Bill Mcmurdo.

Speaking of Ferguson’s future, McMurdo pointed out that he’s wanted by several big clubs, and could be changing clubs in Italy this summer.

“There have been no contacts with Napoli yet, but he is ready to play in the Champions League. He has been linked to Napoli, Milan, Juventus, Inter, Lazio, Atalanta but I have not had direct contact with them. Every big player can be a possibility that we will evaluate in view of next season.”

Ferguson is a product of Hamilton Academical. It was in 2018 that he joined Aberdeen on a €265k deal. In 2022, the Scottish side sold him to Bologna for €2m.

Now given how much the Serie A side is expected to make with his sale, Rangers may regret not having kept hold of him at Ibrox all those years ago.

Transfermarkt value him at €18m, but depending on how the auction goes, he may end up leaving for much more, and none of that money will be ending up in the coffers at Rangers.
