Newcastle are hopeful that Anthony Gordon’s knee injury is not as bad as a first feared, talkSPORT understands.
The winger is still being assessed by the club’s medical department after suffering a problem during the 3-2 defeat at Chelsea on Monday night.
Lasting just 36 minutes of the game, Gordon hit the deck and looked in some discomfort as the Newcastle physio came on to treat him.
The former Everton man then yelped in pain as the physio touched his knee in a worrying sight for Newcastle fans.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the match, manager Eddie Howe said: “It was a surprise. He’s obviously gone down… it’s a knee problem.
“It’s unclear how serious it but it doesn’t look good. But it just adds to our injury problems really.
“I don’t think there was a mechanism or a moment where he felt the injury, just the pain came on so let’s wait and see.”
One man who will be watching on with interest is England boss Gareth Southgate.
Southgate was in attendance at Stamford Bridge on Monday night to cast an eye over the winger, among others, ahead of this summer’s Euro 2024 tournament.
talkSPORT understands Gordon is not currently considered an injury doubt for the Euros, although the Magpies are still awaiting an official prognosis.
