Aston Villa transfer news and views from Birmingham Live as former striker John Fashanu tips Ollie Watkins to leave the club
Former Aston Villa striker John Fashanu believes Ollie Watkins will leave the club in the summer and the club will not look to stand in his way.
Watkins has scored 22 goals in all competitions for Villa so far this season after netting 16 times in 2022/23. The striker’s performances have seen him earn call-ups to Gareth Southgate’s England squad including the most recent one for friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.
It’s that kind of form that leads ex-Villa forward, Fashanu, to believe that he will be on his way in the summer with plenty of big clubs likely to be ready to make a move.
Fashanu told luckyblock.com : “I think Ollie Watkins will be wanting to progress as a player and that could mean joining a different team from Aston Villa this summer.
“And if that were to happen, I don’t think that Aston Villa would want to get in his way and stop Ollie from leaving to help progress his career. Based on his tremendous form this season, a number of big clubs will surely be in for him.
“The goal in football is to work your way up and be the best player you can possibly be, and I am convinced someone big will come in and buy him this summer. I don’t believe that Villa can keep him unfortunately. I’d love to see him at Chelsea next season, and that’s where I can see him fitting in best if he is looking to progress his career.”
“If I were to rate him as a striker, I think Ollie Watkins is as good as me – and that is one hell of a recommendation!,” Fashanu said.
“He is doing very well. It’s easy for ex-players to say ‘oh, he’s not so good’ when talking about players at their former clubs, but he is good, and he knows what he is doing. He plays a different game to how I used to, but he’s a great player and I don’t use that word often.”
