The Dallas Cowboys quickly committed to quarterback Dak Prescott and head coach Mike McCarthy for one more year.
Prescott is coming off arguably the best year of his career and is in the final year of the 4-year, $160 million extension he signed in 2021, and so far it has been unclear where he and the team stand regarding another extension this offseason.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport has reported that the two parties have a mutual understanding even though no offers have been made, quoting owner Jerry Jones as saying: “We are where we are, locked and loaded for this year.”
That doesn’t sound like a mutual understanding that a deal is on the way, as it sounds more like both sides understand if this season ends in another playoff disaster, that it’s time to move on.
Prescott would have no shortage of suitors on the open market and could surely look for a deal similar to the 4-year, $180 million contract Kirk Cousins just got with the Falcons, but the question is whether or not the Cowboys will be the team that wants to give it to him.
This quote sounds like Prescott has to lead this team on a playoff run, at the very least ending the 29-year drought of not reaching the NFC Championship Game.
