Adebayo thinks 61-year-old manager would be better off

Newcastle United have been linked with a number of managers recently with the pressure now piling on Eddie Howe.

There have been some suggestions that Newcastle could look to replace the head coach, or that Howe himself could be tempted by the England job should Gareth Southgate leave in the summer.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Adebayo Akinfenwa thinks one of those possible candidates would suit Newcastle more than he would Liverpool with Jurgen Klopp leaving.

Newcastle could be tempted with iconic manager

Should Howe be replaced, there are a number of supporters who would like to see a big names come in to really help assert Newcastle’s place in Europe.

The ones suggested have been the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Roberto Mancini and Xavi who all could be available in the summer and would be huge coups for Newcastle who have enjoyed very little success recently.

However, there’s one man who’s been linked to the job even before the takeover went through with Jose Mourinho previously stating his admiration for the club due to his links with Sir Bobby Robson at Barcelona.

It’s been suggested that Mourinho could replace the outgoing Klopp at Liverpool, but Akinfenwa thinks that Newcastle would be a better fit for him should he return to the Premier League.

On Mourinho, Akinfenwa said: “I think that’s a better fit [than Liverpool]. When they’re talking about Eddie Howe to England I think it’s unfair, what he’s done at Newcastle has been second to none.

“Him going would be harsh but I think Mourinho would suit Newcastle better.”

Mourinho would definitely be box office

Although he’s not enjoyed the success at his previous clubs, Mourinho’s record historically speaks for itself and the Portuguese manager always brings entertainment to any job he walks into.

The frustration would come when his style of football, typically very defensive and difficult to watch, is not winning games, and then things can become very toxic, which is what happened at his last two jobs in England.

But that’s the sacrifice some Newcastle fans would be willing to make if it meant they were more likely to win some silverware and end their almost 70-year long wait for a domestic trophy.

For now, however, it looks like the Newcastle board are fully behind Howe and unless he is really tempted by the England job then he’ll be sticking around for the new season.
