Congratulations to Nathan Lowe, who has been nominated as Championship apprentice of the year.
The 18-year-old Stoke City striker is on a three-man short list for the EFL’s end of season gala, alongside Leeds United’s Archie Gray and Freddie Issaka, from Plymouth Argyle.
Lowe has broken into the first team picture at Stoke this term, scoring his first goal for the club in September to seal a dramatic 3-2 win away at Bristol City. He made his first senior start days later in the league at home against Southampton. He has stayed around the squad and made three league starts in all, as well as eight cameo appearances from the bench.
He has picked up his first England under-19s cap in that time too, getting the call up in October, and the winner will be announced at an awards evening in London on Sunday, April 14.
Lowe was born into a Manchester United-mad family in Harlow and spent his early life in Bishop’s Stortford before moving to Knutsford when he was eight. He started playing grass roots football with Egerton Football Club and was scouted at Stoke at under-10s level – even if his dad initially needed convincing about the merits of academy football.
“Most people will have never heard of me because I wasn’t a stand out player coming through,” he said earlier this season. “I was kind of close to being released quite a few times and I was going through growth spurts… it’s a bit of a little underdog story.
“Since I’ve signed I’ve definitely been a Stoke fan. I obviously care a lot about the results whether I’m playing or not.”
