Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as the 1897 Group prepare for Bournemouth trial display after encouraging meeting with the club.
The 1897 Group are set to break ground on their exciting plans to enhance the atmosphere at Villa Park with a trial display during Aston Villa’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth later this month.
Their long-term goal is to be visible inside and outside of Villa Park and they have taken inspiration from fan groups at other clubs, such as Wor Flags, Holmesdale Fanatics and Ashburton Army of Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Arsenal respectively. The 1897 Group already has more than 55 members, all from different backgrounds, who are committed to making a difference.
They have two primary goals – to improve the atmosphere for fans and players through displays, mosaics and banners, as well as providing support in local communities. “We don’t want a bad name, we just want Villa Park to be known as one of the top places to come for atmosphere,” one of the group’s founders, Tyler, said on the AVILLAFAN podcast.
“It’s great for the kids too – they can grow up knowing that Villa has this huge atmosphere. We need it to be as good as it can be. There is no political agenda. We just want Villa Park to be rocking.”
After a proactive meeting with Villa officials, the club has given the 1897 Group the potential for up to 100 seats in the P9 block in the Doug Ellis Stand for a trial display against Bournemouth. There will be banners and a scarf display when the players walk out to involve people in the group who do not have a banner, as well as other fans across the stadium.
The intent of the Bournemouth trial display is for future purposes when the group can crowd fund to raise money for larger displays. The 1897 Group also plan to set up a website where fans can donate, buy merchandise and stay connected with updates.
