Inter Milan are considering a move for Manchester United’s Anthony Martial.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Nerazzurri are weighing up whether to sign Martial or Albert Gudmundsson, the 26 year old Icelandic striker currently plying his trade at Genoa.
Inter are clearly prioritising their attack this summer, having already secured an agreement to bring FC Porto’s Mehdi Taremi to the San Siro in June.
Gazzetta note that Martial “almost seems like an old friend, a dated acquaintance, because it is certainly not the first time that his profile has been matched with the Nerazzurri club.”
However, United appear to have no intention of triggering Martial’s one-year contract extension option this summer and so, as a free agent, the Frenchman will be much easier for the Italians to capture this time.
“He has been proposed to Inter and the evaluations are underway,” the report continues.
“Martial joins Gudmundsson, that’s clear. One name excludes the other,” Gazzetta claims, adding that “it is unthinkable” both will be signed in addition to Tarem
Inter attempted to sign Martial last winter but their efforts were rebuffed by United, who only have Rasmus Hojlund as an alternative striker.
As things have turned out, Martial has been injured for almost the entire time since, so the Red Devils would have been wise to cash in on him and let him go.
Because he is in the last six months of his deal, Martial is free to talk to Inter and indeed, Gazzetta claim that he has already held positive discussions with three other suitors, “Fenerbahce and two top-tier French clubs.
They say he “wants to evaluate all the possibilities on the table,” but Inter would, on paper at least, certainly seem to be the most attractive avenue to have opened up so far.
Meanwhile, it still remains to be seen whether the 28 year old has kicked his last ever ball for United, as the season draws to a close and his return from injury remains a distant hope at this point
