Richard Keys has said that Liverpool should not hesitate to spend big to bring Ange Postecoglou through the door if they have identified the Tottenham boss as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.
Soon after Klopp announced that he would be parting ways with Liverpool at the end of this season, it was reported by The Athletic in January that Postecoglou is one of the candidates in consideration to replace the German at the helm.
The Spurs boss’ stock has risen considerably in light of his transformative effect on the Lilywhites, who have transitioned from a counter-attacking side into arguably the most entertaining team to watch across the Premier League.
Various reports over the past couple of months have indicated that Tottenham have no fears about losing their head coach to any of their rivals this summer (Telegraph).
However, some pundits such as Jermaine Pennant have suggested over recent weeks that the Australian would not think twice about jumping ship if the Reds came calling for him at the end of the season (talkSPORT).
Is Ange Postecoglou worth £50m to Liverpool?
There have been reports today that Liverpool have reached a verbal agreement with Ruben Amorim to become Jurgen Klopp’s successor (SkySports), but Keys believes that the Reds should look at paying £50m to bring Postecoglou to Anfield this summer if they feel he is the right man for the job.
The pundit told beIN Sports: “If Liverpool identify Postecoglou as Klopp’s successor, and he costs £50m, I think that’s cheap. Why is there a hesitancy from clubs to pay for backroom staff? Because they’re significant individuals.
“But the gain is what he brings to the club. And ultimately, if you believe him to be the right man, you have a confidence that he’ll deliver success. Therefore, that £50 million becomes insignificant, doesn’t it?”
Spurs Web Opinion
I understand Keys’ larger point about clubs being hesitant to spend big on managers despite being ready to do so on players. I have always found that a little puzzling since the manager is the most important asset at any club.
However, with respect to Postecoglou, Spurs fans should not be losing any sleep over him potentially joining Liverpool. The 58-year-old will be keen to build on the project he has started at Hotspur Way and Levy is not likely to entertain any offers for the Australian.
