Tuesday night’s matchup between the top two teams in the Eastern Conference had everyone’s attention, as the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks could end up seeing each other again in the upcoming 2024 NBA Playoffs.
But another reason fans are buzzing about this game is the Celtics’ absolute lack of free throws in the contest.
The Celtics did not just score zero points from the foul line; they did not even take a single trip all game long to the charity stripe.
Boston Celtics Finish a Game Without Taking A Single Free Throw
According to StatMuse, it was the first time in the history of the league that had zero FT attempts in a contest.
The Celtics are the first team in NBA history to shoot 0 free throws in a game.
The Bucks nearly had the same feat in the same game, as they went only went 1/2 from the foul line. That means in the entire game, only Giannis Antetokounmpo had at least a free-throw attempt, as both freebies were from the two-time league Most Valuable Player — and he didn’t even finish the game as he left the contest in the third quarter with an injury.
Moreover, the two combined free-throw tries by the Celtics and the Bucks were the fewest ever in an NBA game. It wasn’t even close, as the previous record was 11, per StatMuse.
“I didn’t realize that until they told me just before I walked in,” Bucks big man Brook Lopez said during the postgame press conference, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). “It is weird, after the fact. I honestly didn’t really catch it throughout the game. I didn’t notice it.”
The Celtics ended up suffering a 104-91 loss to the Bucks and will look to get back to their winning ways on Thursday at home gainst the New York Knicks.
