Leicester City handed ‘non-starter’ FFP update as points deductions scrutinised

Latest Leicester City news from LeicestershireLive as clubs discuss player spending rules and potential changes.

Premier League clubs are reportedly still expected to receive a points deduction if they breach financial rules.

Leicester City were charged with an alleged breach of the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) back in March. it is claimed that they failed to comply with top-flight financial regulations for the three-year cycle ending in 2022/23 before they were relegated.

City have been referred to an independent commission and face a potential points deduction from next season, which both Nottingham Forest and Everton received with immediate effect for breaching PSR. Leicester are ‘surprised and disappointed’ and have since opted to take legal proceedings.

And now Sky Sports report that Premier League clubs will convene in a shareholders meeting on Wednesday (April 10) with squad cost control said to be a ‘primary issue on the agenda.’ They report that there will be no vote on this issue.

Recent reports have claimed that a a new ‘luxury tax’ could be introduced where clubs would receive a hefty fine instead of a points deduction. Fines would be increased depending on the severity of the breach with the money redistributed among the clubs who complied with the rules.

However, it is reported that points deductions are likey to remain in place for those who breach top-flight financial rules. They add that whilst there is some support for a luxury tax style system, there are fears that this could lead to the wealthiest teams spending huge sums on players.

It is said that discussions on Wednesday are likely to be around how the Premier League will align with new UEFA rules. The European governing body are to introduce regulations from 2025/26 whereby clubs involved in Europe will only be able to spend 70 per cent of their total income on players.
