NFL GM: Giants’ QB decision is an ‘unusual … second chance’

Later this month, the Giants will decide if they want to use their No. 6 overall pick on a Daniel Jones replacement.

Owner John Mara has said — despite his support of the quarterback they extended last offseason — he gives general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll the green light to draft a new signal caller.

The Giants made a commitment to Jones after the 2022 season with a deal that has $82 million in guaranteed money, and they could already be ready to move on from the 26-year-old. But in Schoen and Daboll’s third year in their roles, the chance to draft a top quarterback after a disastrous 6-11 season may be too good to pass up.

“It is really unusual because most of us won’t ever get a second chance like that,” an NFL general manager told Ralph Vacchiano of FOX Sports. “You know when you make a decision like that — drafting a quarterback high or signing one to a huge deal — it’s either going to get you a new contract someday or it’ll get you fired. It’s the biggest decision you can make, and most places don’t let you make it twice.”

Jones play just six games last season after dealing with neck injuries and then suffering a season-ending ACL tear in Week 9 against the Raiders. Last offseason after the 2022 playoff berth, the Giants signed him to a four-year, $160 million contract. He has one year of guaranteed money remaining on the deal, meaning he’s essentially in the final year of a two-year, $82 million deal.
