Rangers: McFadden slams ‘poor’ Cyriel Dessers moment v Ross County, he got it all wrong

James McFadden was left unimpressed on Sky Sports by Cyriel Dessers after the Rangers striker missed a great chance in the 3-2 defeat away at Ross County on Sunday.

The Gers’ striker has drawn criticism in his time at the club after some frustrating moments, especially at the start of his career in Glasgow.

Dessers, 29, had a golden chance against the Staggies following great work from Fabio Silva and Borna Barisic down the wing.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Main Event (14 April, 12:45 pm), McFadden criticised the Nigeria international for his finishing. He said: “It’s a poor finish from Dessers, great play from Rangers down the left, you can see Borna Barisic desperate to get down the side of Silva, he does.

“It’s good movement from Dessers but it’s such a poor finish, it’s a poor finish, it goes over the stands, which albeit it’s not the biggest but he’s leaning back he should be hitting the target there.

“You can see what he was trying to do, side-foot, back across Ross Laidlaw’s right-hand side, leans back, gets it all wrong.”

How did Cyriel Dessers perform for Rangers v Ross County?

After going five games without a goal, Dessers grabbed one against Hibernian before getting an assist in the Old Firm v Celtic. He also had one frustratingly chalked-off for a foul.

Heading into the game away at Ross County, he was looking to add to his 13 goals and three assists in the SPFL so far this campaign [FotMob].

He certainly should have had a goal as his effort from barely 10 yards out was well saved by Ross Laidlaw. The effort was worth 0.76 xGOT, according to FotMob, which just shows how simple a finish it might have proved to be.

Dessers was hooked by Philippe Clement on 73 minutes as the Light Blues boss opted to give Kemar Roofe a chance up top.

In his time on the pitch, he accumulated 1.26 xG [FotMob] across four shots with two of those being blocked, one saved and one going wide.

It was certainly a frustrating performance for Rangers fans to watch as the home side took all three points in a 3-2 win. If Dessers had taken his chances the game could have been so much different…
