Rangers: Clement has to break Lundstram gentleman’s agreement

Philippe Clement should renege on the verbal agreement between Rangers and John Lundstram regarding a new contract for the midfielder after his shocking performance against Ross County.

Lundstram’s deal expires at the end of this season, with fresh terms yet to be penned despite the summer transfer window approaching.

However, Rangers Review journalist Chris Jack had previously revealed on 18 March that “all parties were in agreement that a new contract is the way forward”.

Following the Gers’ shock 3-2 loss against Ross County, however, Clement may have good reason to doubt if that agreement is in the club’s best interests.

John Lundstram new contract shouldn’t happen at Rangers

Lundstram, 30, is one of the senior, more experienced members of this Rangers squad – but that experience was nowhere to be seen as Ross County ran rampant at Victoria Park.

The Englishman is expected to be the beating heart of Clement’s side, dictating play from the base of midfield – but his performance against Don Cowie’s men was not up to his standards.

Lundstram’s primary focus appeared to be keeping things safe in possession. He registered a high touch count, taking 108, and connected with 83 of his 92 passes for a pass accuracy of 90 per cent [FotMob], but those numbers are meaningless if his use of the ball is not effective – and it wasn’t.

Furthermore, he was equally ineffectual out of possession, getting completely bypassed for two of Ross County’s three goals and failing to stamp his authority on proceedings from the middle of the park.

If he continues to produce such displays, Clement may decide he is better off looking for a replacement midfielder this summer.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has suggested that Dundee be kicked out of the SPFL following the pitch issues that have disrupted their game against the Gers.
