Celtic and Southampton race to sign Bayer Leverkusen Star

Celtic, Southampton and PSV Eindhoven are plotting moves to sign Austrian goalkeeper Patrick Pentz, sources have told Football Insider.

Pentz is currently on loan at Danish side Brondby from newly-crowned Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

The 27-year-old has impressed for the Superliga club since being drafted in as a replacement for Mads Hermansen following his big-money move to Leicester City last summer.

The Austrian international has done a solid job of filling the void left by the Dane, having kept nine clean sheets in 24 appearances this season.

The shot-stopper’s contract with Leverkusen is set to expire in June 2025, with his suitors hoping they can secure a bargain deal for him once the transfer window reopens.

Celtic are in the market for a new keeper as Joe Hart is set to retire at the end of the season and Pentz’s ability on the ball means he fits the type of profile Brendan Rodgers is looking to bring in between the sticks.

Southampton are also on the lookout for a new No.1, with Gavin Bazunu ruled out until 2025 after rupturing his Achilles tendon in the warm-up before the Saints’ 3-0 victory over Preston North End on 16 April.

Celtic could move to sign Patrick Pentz as Joe Hart replacement

Pentz could prove to be a reliable option for any of the interested parties after helping Brondby fight for the Danish title this season.

Rodgers will be keen to sort his goalkeeping situation out quickly after learning that Hart will hang up his boots in just a matter of weeks.

The need for a new keeper is just as desperate at Southampton after their promotion hopes were dealt a blow following the injury to Bazunu.

Pentz is yet to make a single appearance for Leverkusen since signing from Stade Reims in January 2023.

The German side could be tempted to cash in on the Austrian before his contract runs out at the end of next season, with several clubs plotting a move for him this summer.
