Zach Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos after three seasons with the New York Jets, and his mum Lisa is excited for her son’s fresh start in the Mile High City
Zach Wilson’s mother, Lisa, couldn’t hide her excitement over her son’s move from the New York Jets to the Denver Broncos, following his challenging stint in the NFL since being picked second overall in 2021.
Despite high hopes, Wilson’s time with the Jets was marred by difficulties, culminating in more interceptions than touchdowns in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The arrival of four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in 2023 was meant to provide guidance for Wilson, but an Achilles injury to Rodgers thrust Wilson back into the starting role.
He ended the season with 2,271 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions, leading to Jets’ GM Joe Douglas giving him the nod to look for a new team. The Broncos have now snapped up Wilson, trading away a sixth-round draft pick for the quarterback and a seventh-round selection.
Overjoyed by the prospect of a new beginning, Lisa Wilson expressed her enthusiasm on Instagram with a post showing her son in a Broncos jersey, captioning it: “Excited for a fresh new start. Let’s go!”.
Wilson’s dad, Michael, is already sporting Broncos gear, with his mum Lisa posting a snap of the new Denver sensation’s father in a jersey, captioning it: “Someone’s excited,” Wilson steps into the shoes left by Russell Wilson, who has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Head coach Sean Payton and Wilson didn’t exactly hit it off, with the seasoned quarterback being sidelined for some games amid a contract squabble. Wilson expressed his astonishment at the Broncos’ proposal that he postpone the injury guarantees in his deal. “I didn’t want to set a precedent for players to remove their injury guarantees,” Wilson remarked. “There was no way I was going to do that. They said, ‘We’re going to bench you, we’re going to bench you.’ I said, ‘Alright.'”.
The Broncos might snag another quarterback in this week’s Draft, but top prospects like Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and J. J. McCarthy might be just out of grasp at No. 12. They could consider trading down to possibly draft Bo Nix from Oregon.
Coach Payton is keeping his cards close to his chest. “I don’t know that a lot has changed relative to prioritising what’s most important for the quarterback position,” Payton mused earlier in the year. “Certainly, there has been change. I think accuracy is important and I think leadership comes in a lot of different ways. Historically speaking, we’ve had quiet, successful quarterbacks and we’ve had outspoken, successful quarterbacks.”
“We’ve had tall and short [successful quarterbacks]. So there are a lot of things that make you understand shapes and sizes and personality traits, but there are some constants that go with successful players at that position. I think offenses have changed a little bit and yet, we’ve never not valued a quarterback that can beat you with his feet. That goes back to [Steve] Young and [Joe] Montana. Historically, that’s nothing new. We are seeing more in the college game, and then we get to evaluate that and then we’re seeing more of that come into our game. I think it’s good.”
“I think fourth-and-one in overtime in the Super Bowl – the play we saw Kansas City run – I don’t know that we see that play 10 years ago. That doesn’t mean we don’t see a conversion, but I don’t think we see that RPO option with a few different reads. Those are some of the things that I think have evolved.”
