Announced on Friday, Juwan Howard returns to the NBA after a deal was agreed to join the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach, per ESPN sources.
The former Michigan basketball head coach Howard was fired by the franchise back in March after five seasons, he now joins new Nets coach Jordi Fernandez’s staff.
Howard will now join assistant Steve Hetzel, who came from the Portland Trail Blazers after three seasons, as the newest member of Fernandez’s coaching staff.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN report also confirmed the news, the former Michigan Wolverines head coach had “agreed to join the Brooklyn Nets as an assistant coach”.
After spending the last five years at Michigan, he was fired in March. Michigan announced they were parting ways with Howard, who has led the team to Sweet 16 and Elite Eight runs, but struggled to progress further.
He was fired on March 15 after an 8-24 season with the Wolverines and missed out on the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. In five seasons, an overall record of 87-72 as the Wolverines head coach.
An assistant for the Miami Heat from 2013 to 19 spending six seasons under Erik Spoelstra, his NBA career included 19 seasons, two championships, and All-Star and All-NBA selections.
He will now join a Nets team that took a step back after reaching the postseason in five consecutive seasons. Brooklyn went 32-50 in, 2023-24 and finished 11th in the Eastern Conference.
In Brooklyn, the 51-year-old will now join new head coach Fernandez’s staff, who spent the past few seasons as associate head coach of the Kings and also coached the Canada men’s national team.
