Ange Postecoglou could make five changes when Tottenham travel to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea on Thursday (2 May).
Spurs are set for an incredibly difficult week off the back of a bitterly disappointing 3-2 defeat to Arsenal in the North London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (28 April).
Following their visit to Chelsea, Postecoglou and his players will travel to Liverpool for a clash with the Reds at Anfield on Sunday (5 May).
These are historically two of Tottenham’s toughest games of the season, and the Postecoglou’s side arguably need to claim maximum points if they are to keep their fading UEFA Champions League hopes alive.
Two more defeats this week could mathematically end Spurs’ top-four ambitions should Aston Villa beat Brighton on Sunday (5 May), and Postecoglou could therefore look to make some changes at Stamford Bridge to ensure that doesn’t happen.
Ange Postecoglou could make five Tottenham changes against Chelsea
While Spurs have been conceding a lot as of late, it is hard to place much of the blame on Guglielmo Vicario, who should keep his place against Chelsea despite making just one save against the Gunners (Sofascore).
Ben Davies disappointed in Destiny Udogie’s absence, struggling against Bukayo Saka as he was dribbled past twice, and he could be replaced by Emerson Royal.
Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven were two of the few players who could leave the pitch against Arsenal with their heads held high, with the former scoring and completing 97 per cent of his passes while the latter made two tackles and two clearances.
Pedro Porro should also keep his place at Stamford Bridge despite not making much of an impact against Arsenal.
Postecoglou shuffled things around in the middle of the park on Sunday and could look to do that again on Thursday.
Rodrigo Bentancur was hooked at half-time after a disappointing first half which saw him win just 50 per cent of his ground duels, while his midfield partner Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored an own goal.
Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr could therefore come in for the midfield duo.
James Maddison continued his poor run of form with an incredibly underwhelming display in the North London derby. The England international played just one accurate cross into the box from seven attempts, completed zero per cent of his dribbles and won just two of his eight ground duels.
He should be replaced by Giovani Lo Celso who came on in the dying moments against Arsenal and completed 100 per cent of his passes, with one of those key.
Dejan Kulusevski is likely to keep his place on the right after playing two key passes and succeeding with five of his seven dribble attempts against Mikel Arteta’s side.
With Timo Werner’s status unclear after he hobbled off in the 31st minute, the German could be replaced on the left by Son Heung-min, who struggled in the number nine role against the Gunners.
The South Korea international failed to provide an accurate cross into the box from two attempts and also missed one big chance.
That would then allow Richarlison to return up front after he was limited to a role from the bench on Sunday.
In other Tottenham news, revenues at the club are set to reach “enormous” heights after a recent £110million claim.
