Dan Plumley has told Leeds United to do more when it comes to second-hand ticket sales ahead of the final Championship game of the season against Southampton.
The Whites have come under criticism after tickets for the game at Elland Road appeared on third-party sites, but responded with a statement (30 April) to encourage fans to avoid paying “hugely inflated prices” for the fixture.
The football finance expert admitted that he felt the club should be doing more to stop fans paying “crazy” prices to attend games, and believes it’s something that should be higher up on the agenda for all clubs in the football pyramid to help fans.
“It is really tricky and there are things we can do, whether that’s a club directive or not,” he said exclusively to MOT Leeds News.
“I know people aren’t necessarily fans of the secondary ticket sites but the reality is that if you do need one of those things, then you get these situations that are happening here where fans are just trying to flog them just between people and there’s all kinds of things, where people have been sold a ticket that isn’t really there and then the person has gone missing and you’ve lost out on that money.
“I think in some ways we probably need to look at secondary ticketing more anyway as an agenda item, whether that’s through official sites or whether that’s the clubs in partnership.
“I just think in this day and age, I appreciate that you have to reward loyal fans, but if you can’t make it to a game or there are tickets spare, why can’t we come up with a system where fans can help each other out a little bit through more official channels?
“Because if it goes the other way and people are prepared to pay these crazy prices, and maybe still not even receive a ticket, then to me surely that’s worse.
“A big issue in football for sure, but I do think there are solutions. I just think, perhaps, we’re not looking at them as much as we should be.”
Leeds United must do more for fans
A few weeks ago the suggestion was that the final game of the season could be a parade for a Championship winning side, or at the very least a promotion party.
But after some poor form in recent weeks it now seems like the playoffs look like the certain route for Daniel Farke’s side if they want to make it into the Premier League, even if they may have some injuries.
It’s no surprise that Whites fans want to be in the stadium to support their team on the final day, where their support will cap off a wonderful regular season regardless of the final outcome.
But they should be doing far more to prevent their fans from being caught out by scams or ticket touts just because they want to support their team.
There must be systems in place for fans to be able to help each other properly, regardless of if it’s their 1000th game or first game. It’s well within the realms of possibility and with a bit of effort this could become an issue of the past.
