SPFL agree ‘lucrative’ commercial deal

Rangers’ pressure on the SPFL have seen them strike a “lucrative” sponsorship deal with William Hill, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported via their website on Tuesday (7 May) that the bookmakers will replace cinch as the SPFL’s title sponsor in a record-breaking deal.

It is understood that the SPFL’s previous agreement with cinch was worth around £1.6million-a-year. However, the car sales firm have decided to walk away from that agreement two years early after a legal dispute with Rangers.

The Light Blues put “major pressure” on SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster to find a replacement and the Scottish Sun claims that the “details have been rubber-stamped” for William Hill to step in from next season onwards.

Rangers see to it that value of Scottish Premiership rises – again

Rangers are just about the only team in Scotland who are doing anything to improve the value of the game there.

If it wasn’t for the Gers’ strong performances in Europe in recent years, there wouldn’t be as many teams getting into European competition and therefore making more money to improve facilities, youth recruitment and coaching and so on.

The Light Blues are just about the only team putting pressure on Doncaster and co to do a better job of selling the SPFL as a brand.

That deal with cinch was a shocker. £1.6million-a-year for a title sponsorship of a league in this day and age is pathetic.

While it remains to be seen how much William Hill will pay, you can bet that it’s a lot better and will benefit clubs across Scotland much more than the previous terms.
