McCoist winner as Leeds United face Southampton

Sunday afternoon’s Championship play-off final between Leeds United and Southampton at Wembley promises to be a close affair and Ally McCoist has predicted the winner, on penalties.

Both sides come into Sunday’s play-off final having been relegated from the Premier League last season, and finished just three points apart on 90 and 87. Both drew their first legs 0-0 in the play-off semi-finals.

Then, dismantled their opposition in the second legs. Leeds beat Norwich 4-0 at Elland Road with a super first-half that left Norwich bewildered, while Southampton got the better of West Brom at St.Mary’s.

Leeds finished three points ahead of Southampton in third but The Saints beat Leeds home and away, though The Whites will feel there were reasons both defeats which have been corrected ahead of Sunday.

It is a difficult one to call come Sunday but some pundits have already given their predictions, and icon McCoist is the latest to do so on TalkSPORT. He thinks it will go to penalties, and picked the winner.

Ally McCoist predicts Leeds play-off final against Southampton

Leeds will have Connor Roberts and Dan James available from the start come Sunday after both managed solid cameo roles in the win over Norwich. But Patrick Bamford faces a race against time to get himself fit.

The one-time England man is yet to get back to the pitch after picking up a knock to his knee in the 4-3 win over Middlesbrough last month, missing four games since against QPR, Southampton and Norwich.

McCoist told TalkSPORT this morning: “I think that one is going to go all the way and I’m taking Leeds to win on penalties. How is that for completely not sitting on the fence, that is going to be a great game.”

Russell Martin delivers injury update on Southampton duo

Che Adams was missing from Friday night’s game against West Brom, while Ross Stewart was on the bench but the Scottish target man failed to get on the pitch as he overcomes a long-term injury.

Southampton manager Martin commented on the availability of the duo ahead of Sunday’s final at Wembley and expects to have both Scotland international ready and in with a shout to start the game.

“I think that one is going to go all the way and I’m taking Leeds to win on penalties. How is that for completely not sitting on the fence, I think that is going to be a great game,” Martin said.
