After acquiring wideout Stefon Diggs this offseason, Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans thinks their improved receiving corps could create a matchup nightmare for defenses.
“We want to put defenses in binds, and I think with those three guys, it allows us to do that because they are so different, and they can all do different things,” Ryans said via ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime. “But at the end of the day, they are all explosive finishers with the football, and that is what makes those guys great players. They can win on third down, and they can finish and get in the end zone, and that’s what we look for at all skill positions on offense.”
Entering this offseason, wide receiver wasn’t a glaring need for the Texans. Houston WR Nico Collins finished eighth in the league in receiving yards (1,297 in 15 games), while Tank Dell recorded seven TD catches in 11 games before fracturing his fibula in Week 13 against the Denver Broncos.
Ryans felt they needed one more pass-catcher, though. In April, the Texans dealt a 2025-second rounder to the Buffalo Bills for Diggs.
Diggs made four Pro Bowls in four seasons in Buffalo, but the 30-year-old appeared to regress in 2023. Per Bien-Aime, from Weeks 10 to 18, he only had one TD catch. Ryans dismissed this concern, however, pointing out how Diggs has consistently produced throughout his career.
If Diggs recaptures his elite form in Houston, the Texans should have one of the best receiving corps in the NFL. In his top 12 WR trios for 2024, CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell ranks the Texans’ trio as the best in the league.
