Cody Is 38 Today. Congrats To Our Former Sky Blue Striker!

Birthday greetings are also due from CCFPA to our member, former Sky Blue forward Cody McDonald who is celebrating his 38th birthday today! Cody was born in Witham on 30th May 1986.

Throughout his career Cody has been able to find the net scoring, on average, a little under every third game and by the end of season 2018-19 had scored 101 times in his 342 Football League appearances and (even better) 66 in 111 non-league outings between 2003-19.

After non-league experience with WithamMaldon Town and Dartford he was ‘discovered’ through apprenticeship at Norwich City in 2008, in total he netted five times in 32 appearances in all competitions (mainly as sub) before moving to the Priestfield Stadium on loan to Gillingham for the 2010-11 season.

His impressive haul of 25 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions for the Gills saw Cody brought to the Ricoh in August 2011. Though some would say he never was given a sustained chance to prove his worth with the Sky Blues, Cody managed eight goals in his total of 47 appearances (many of them from the bench). He returned to the Gills from Coventry in January 2013 with the good wishes of Sky Blues fans.

In his second spell in the south east Cody made 180 appearances for the Gills scoring 56 goals and also played for Dover Athletic in 2014. He spent 2017-18 with AFC Wimbledon scoring seven times in his forty outings before moving to Ebbsfleet.

Cody has faced the Sky Blues with his last two League clubs and are pleased to say he has retained his affection for the Sky Blues since joining the Association in September 2013.

As mentioned, in November 2018 Cody joined National League side Ebbsfleet United and scored three times in eleven outings by the end of the 2018-19 season. He was not able to make appearances for the Fleet in 2019-20 as he was recovering from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury received in a game in February 2019. It was announced in January 2020 that Ebbsfleet had taken up the option to terminate his contract. Cody was grateful for the club sticking by him during his long term recovery and then, due to be ready for a return two years ago last March, the coronavirus hit football’s future with a vengeance and, as far as we can tell, Cody has not played again.

Have a great birthday today, Cody and good luck if you continue to seek a career in football. We hope to see you back at Sky Blues home games and/or CCFPA events back in Coventry next season!
