Chelsea are looking to sell before they can bring in players and Champions League finalist Ian Maatsen is on the list of potential sales.
Ian Maatsen has boosted his profile after deciding to move to Dortmund in January where he’s helped them reach the Champions League final. The 22-year-old Dutch defender signed a fresh deal at Stamford Bridge before being allowed to go out on loan in January.
He is one of the players alongside Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja who the club are looking to sell for their project having invested massively in the the squad.
Chelsea inserted a fee of £35million for his sale and Dortmund will be happy to pay the fee if they can win the Champions League against all odds this evening.
According to Transfermarkt, Maatsen’s market value stands at €40m, while the data from analysts at the CIES FootballObservatory peg it at half that. With a release clause of £35m (€41m) it would suggest that the former is closer to the mark, especially with Dortmund considering triggering the option to try and keep the defender at the Westfalenstadion permanently.
Maatsen evidence of why young players should always play
The young defender could easily have decided to stay at Chelsea as many have done and earn his money and play little football, but the decision to move to Germany has been magical.
He’s restored his reputation as one of the best young full-backs in the game and could end up a Champions League winner this evening while Chelsea could only finish sixth and have qualified for the Europa Conference League.
Some young players like to stay in big teams even when it means they will not play but Maatsen has followed in the footsteps of players like Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham by going to Westfalenstadion which shows that just being on the field could lead to a massive career development.
