Coventry City reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup in 2023-24 and were unfortunate not to make the final – but their players have been recognised in the competition’s team of the season
Coventry City have dominated the FA Cup team of the season after heroics which saw them reach the semi-final of the world’s oldest football competition. As voted for by supporters, the Sky Blues are represented by six stars who played their part in helping the club reach Wembley, where they were denied a place in the final by Manchester United despite a stunning comeback and a fourth goal which was questionably ruled out by VAR.
City began their FA Cup campaign by hammering Oxford United – who they’ll go toe to toe with next season following the Us’ promotion to the Championship – back in January. They then needed a replay to overcome Sheffield Wednesday, before they brushed aside non-league Maidstone United to reach the quarter finals and a clash with Premier League Wolves.
The day at Molineux will live long in the memory for those of a sky blue persuasion who were in attendance. Conceding twice in the final 10 minutes when leading 1-0, it appeared as though City had blown their chance to have a day out at Wembley – but the stoppage time heroics of Haji Wright and Ellis Simms put paid to those doubts.
Trailing 3-0 to United at Wembley, Mark Robins’ men staged a remarkable comeback to draw level. After extra time and penalties, and after Wright was adjudged to have been ruled offside in the build up to what Coventry thought was their fourth and winner through Victor Torp, the club’s FA Cup adventure came to a cruel end, but thousands of supporters – and undoubtedly a host of Sky Blues fans – have recognised the side’s efforts in reaching such a stage of the competition to mix it with the elite.
Simms, Wright, Kasey Palmer, Callum O’Hare, Jake Bidwell and Liam Kitching all made the FA Cup best XI. Those half dozen players are joined by Kevin De Bruyne, Cole Palmer, Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot and Raphael Varane.
