Clarity emerges over Coventry City’s rumoured £4m+ deal for international midfielder

Coventry City have not completed a deal for Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Stamenic, a report from Coventry Live has said.

Coventry City are sure to be in the market for some new recruits this summer and plenty of players have already been linked with the Sky Blues.

There was some high profile transfer business last summer after the departures of Viktor Gyokeres and Gustavo Hamer. This year might not see quite the same level of movement, but some eye-catching deals will be on the radar.

Most recently, reports over in Serbia claimed that Coventry city had struck a deal for Red Star Belgrade midfielder Marko Stamenic, coming in at £4.26m.

However, local outlet Coventry Live has now said that this is not the case. They do not completely rule out the possibility of the 21-time New Zealand international being a target, but a deal has not been sealed and no signings whatsoever are expected this week.

Stamenic, 22, has been with Red Star for a little over a year. He’s played 35 times since joining, chipping in with two goals and an assist along the way.

New midfielders on the radar?

It seems likely that Coventry City will be in the market for some fresh options in the middle of the park coming into the summer transfer window.

Ben Sheaf is a wanted man and while the Sky Blues will be keen to keep him, the club have shown before that they will sell for the right price.

Liam Kelly is departing while the likes of Ryan Howley and Kai Andrews seem like strong contenders for loan exits.

That would leave the wanted Sheaf, Victor Torp, Josh Eccles and Jamie Allen as options in midfield. Adding some new faces to the mix seems like an inevitability, though time will tell whether these Stamenic reports develop into anything after being dismissed by local media.

The aim for next season

Coventry City will be determined to earn a play-off spot next season after falling short in their push for the top six this time around. A poor start meant they had a lot of ground to cover and their charge up the table wasn’t quite enough this time around.

Their run to the FA Cup semi-final ensured this campaign remains a memorable one though.

That said, it would be a disappointment if they were to fall short again. The group grew stronger and stronger as they went along and with the addition of some extra talent, Mark Robins and co will be confident of breaking back into the play-offs.

A player like Stamenic would help them do that, but it seems claims of an imminent move are wide of the mark amid this fresh update.
