Burnley should be convinced by QPR man on Leeds United evidence

QPR’s Marti Cifuentes would be a solid appointment for Burnley, especially after his side’s performance against Leeds United.

The Clarets recently suffered relegation from the Premier League, and now they have been hit with a double blow, as manager Vincent Kompany has departed for German giants, Bayern Munich.

The announcement was published last week (29th of May), leaving Burnley in an unfortunate position as they prepare for next season in the Championship.

The Clarets will be disappointed with anything other than promotion next season, so this next managerial appointment must be the correct one.

A number of well-known names in English football have been linked with the vacant role, with the likes of Frank Lampard and Alan Pardew allegedly being targeted by the club.

One name in particular is a rather exciting option though, as QPR’s Marti Cifuentes has been thrown into the mix, according to the Athletic.

As mentioned, Burnley will be desperate for immediate promotion next season, meaning they will have to compete with the best that the league have to offer, and Cifuentes has already done that in his short spell in England so far. The game that caught the attention of many towards the end of the season was QPR’s surprising thrashing over Leeds United.

It was by far QPR’s best performance of the season, and Cifuentes was the main man responsible. If the Clarets are serious about next season, they should be tempted by the Spaniard after that shock victory at Loftus Road.

Marti Cifuentes’ QPR stun Leeds United

Towards the end of April, Queens Park Rangers were battling to stay in the Championship following a disappointing campaign, while Leeds United were chasing the automatic promotion places, so a result for the hosts (QPR) would be huge.

The match was live in front of the Sky Sports cameras, so it caught the attention of many when QPR’s Ilias Chair gave his side the lead after just eight minutes. The Hoops were not going to stop there though, as Lucas Andersen doubled their lead to give them a two-goal advantage going into the break.

The second half was just as impressive as the first as Leeds United were completely caught off-guard. Goals from Lyndon Dykes and Sam Field killed the game as the hosts picked up an incredible 4-0 win.

Leeds were in need of a result in order to make the automatic promotion places, but Cifuentes set his side up perfectly to pull off a shock result. The visitors had 61% possession and 15 shots compared to QPR’s 11, but it was an absolute masterclass by the Spaniard in charge. Burnley will surely look back on that performance when considering Vincent Kompany’s successor.

Cifuentes would be a solid appointment for Burnley

Cifuentes has only managed in England for less than a season, but in such a short time, he has proved that he has the qualities to be a top manager in the Championship, at the very least. QPR were in a horrid state at the time of his appointment, as relegation was certainly on the cards.

It was far from easy for Cifuentes to steer the side clear of the drop zone, but eventually he did it rather comfortably, and that memorable victory at home to Leeds played a big part in that.

He proved that he is able to compete against the biggest and best sides in the Championship, having also defeated eventual champions, Leicester City, 2-1 away from home. This result and the Leeds United result just shows how much of an impact Cifuentes has had at Loftus Road, considering the state of the side at the time of his appointment.

The Spaniard has managed a win-rate just shy of 40% at QPR so far, and considering how little time he has spent in England, he is only destined to get better, hence why Burnley should not think twice about taking a punt on him.
