The reason why Newcastle have walked away from a deal

Despite Newcastle United’s optimism that a deal could be concluded for Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer, the club have now ended negotiations with Everton.

Everton are one of a few Premier League clubs who need to raise funds before Sunday’s PSR deadline, along with Newcastle.

And those who have been following developments over the past few days, will have perhaps imagined that Yankuba Minteh would effectively trade places with Calvert-Lewin, raising necessary funds for both clubs.

However, TBR Football understands that Newcastle have now decided to walk away from talks with Everton over Calvert-Lewin.

The striker, who scored seven Premier League goals in a relatively successful season from the point of view of avoiding injury, was keen to move to Tyneside this summer.

However, both club’s valuation of Calvert-Lewin quickly became an issue in negotiations.

Newcastle valued the England international at around £25m given he’s entering the final year of his contract.

But TBR can confirm that Everton were demanding £40m for their number nine.

Newcastle haven’t entirely given up on signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin

That being said, TBR understands that Newcastle would be ready to talk again if Everton drop their asking price.

Of course, the two clubs have also been discussing a deal for 19-year-old winger Minteh, who is returning to Newcastle after his season-long loan at Feyenoord.

In 37 appearances, Minteh netted 11 goals for the Dutch side, also providing six assists.

And whilst Minteh is keen on a move to Goodison Park, the winger is currently considered too expensive for Everton.

Minteh is yet to register a competitive appearance for Newcastle, and whether his move is to Everton or not, it seems he could leave Tyneside without doing so.

It’s been reported that Minteh was shocked by Newcastle’s decision to sell him this summer, even if he has now accepted the idea of finding a new challenge.

But Eddie Howe and his team didn’t envisage there being sufficient first team opportunities for the young forward this season according to reports, given Newcastle failed to qualify for European football.

So perhaps it’s now back to the drawing board for both Everton and Newcastle, who will still need to seek a solution before June 30.
