Transfer ‘leak’ emerges from Leeds United as he considers exit

Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray is “definitely considering” proving himself in a top European league via a move to Borussia Dortmund, according to Bild.

The German publication reported that after the Whites missed out on promotion back to the Premier League, Dortmund have been given a boost in pursuing Gray, a long-term target for the Black-Yellows.

18-year-old Gray is under contract at Elland Road from 2028, but with United set for another season in the Championship, Dortmund are confident that they could sign him for a fee between £20million and £29.6million

Gray is reportedly keen to test himself at the highest level, after 52 appearances in his first season for the Peacocks, although Dortmund could press forward with other signings, such as Pascal Gross from Brighton, before submitting a bid.

Bild reports: “It has now leaked out from his entourage that he is definitely considering a move to the Ruhr club to take the next step in his career. After all, he could immediately prove his skills in the Champions League with the black and yellow team. However, there are different reports about the transfer fee for the highly talented player. There is talk of anything from 20 million pounds to around 35 million euros.

Leeds United must do all they can to prevent Archie Gray transfer

No matter who comes and who goes in what’s expected to be a revolving door-like summer at Elland Road, one player the Peacocks must ensure stays put is their teenage academy superstar [Fabrizio Romano, 29 May].

Tipped for greatness almost as soon as entering his teenage years, last season showed the wider world exactly what all the hype was about for an 18-year-old who plays well beyond his years [Justin Allen, 15 April].

Proving equally adept in central midfield or at right-back, Gray was one of the Whites’ most consistent performers as Daniel Farke’s side finished third in the table, amassing 90 points in the process.

Their subsequent failure to win the play-offs, losing 1-0 to Southampton in the final at Wembley, means that sales will be made to keep pace with profit and sustainability guidelines.

As an academy product, selling Gray would register as 100 per cent profit in the EFL’s eyes, but regardless, Gray is a player who could be the cornerstone of his hometown club for years to come, and this summer is a vital one in ensuring that dream doesn’t end prematurely [BBC Radio Leeds, 29 May].

In other Leeds United news, Graham Smyth has evaluated the Whites’ chances of signing Joe Rodon from Tottenham.
